Irish sailors will soon be on the way to the Mediterranean to join an EU force cracking down on Libyan gunrunning.
The proposal is being brought by Tánaiste and Defence Minister, Micheál Martin, and after his fellow ministers give the green light, as expected, it will go to the Dáil for final approval. Other elements of the operation are preventing illicit petrol exports from Libya, training the Libyan Coast Guard and Navy, and disrupting human trafficking networks.23 EU member States contribute to Operation Irini and the Defence Forces currently have three personnel deployed at the Operational Headquarters in Rome.
