The government has confirmed it plans to house 500 male asylum seekers onto a barge moored off the Dorset Coast – in an attempt to reduce the cost of hotels.
The Home Office said the Bibby Stockholm – which will now be towed from southern Italy to Portland port – will provide “basic and functional” accommodation, but local Tory politicians and refugee charities have both voiced their opposition.

PGMcNamara So much for stop the boats. Irony will be lost on SuellaBraverman . What is needed is a properly funded asylum policy, proper funding and collaboration to stop the traffickers, proper safe routes for asylum seekers and to stop demonising asylum seekers and immigrants.

PGMcNamara We have two prisons on Portland. Gary Glitter is in one of them. The Verne was an asylum centre a few years ago and we had a prison ship here about 12 years ago. It would be better for HM Government to have asylum processing in France like the French suggest
PGMcNamara The way a government treats its most vulnerable people tells you a lot about how they would treat everyone if they could get away with it. They show nothing but contempt for refugees, the disabled and other vulnerable groups.
