DoH Officer in Charge Maria Rosario Vergeire discouraged those who plan to undertake self-flagellation and crucifixion rites as it may lead to body injuries.During a media briefing on Tuesday, Vergeire said that hospitals and health facilities are 'always prepared' whether during regular days or holidays.She said that they anticipate increased cases of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
'We encourage other sacrifices to show our faith, as these [self-flagellation] acts may have a bad effect on our health,' Vergeire said.On the tradition of 'pahalik' or kissing religious icons, Vergeire said that the government has no restrictions imposed on the activity and that it would be up to each person if they will do the activity safely.
