The Buckeye State ranks fourth among U.S. states for summer travel, according to WalletHub’s 2023 Best and Worst States for Summer Road Trips. WalletHub’s best state summer travel rankings were compiled by assessing three key metrics: activities, cost, and safety. Ohio ranked 12th in summer activities, 18th in cost, and 21st in safety, according to WalletHub.Activities included the number of zoos and botanicals per capita; amusement and theme parks per capita; summer fairs and festivals per capita; historical sites per capita, as well as nightlife options, scenic byways, share of total area designated as national parkland and more.

WalletHub measured costs by taking a look at average gas prices; lowest price of a three-star hotel room; lowest price of camping; average cost of car repairs; vacation rentals per capita and cost of living index. As for safety metrics, WalletHub took a look at the quality of roads and bridges; violent crimes per 1,000 residents; portion of uninsured drivers; increase in vehicle travel between 2000 and 2022; the number of traffic-related fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles traveled and more.
