of tomorrow could let you go from the curb straight onto the plane without ever interacting with a human being — even if your itinerary does not go according to plan and you lose your luggage.

From using seaweed as an alternative to plastics to offering a robotic wheelchair ride to limited-mobility travelers, these tweaks and upgrades could land at San Francisco International Airport in the near future.That’s what inspired a multiscreen, self-service kiosk on wheels from the United Kingdom-based Baggage Solutions. The four touch screens are mounted on a repurposed hospital trolley, which can be rolled out to perform lost baggage triage in chaotic situations.

Enter WHILL’s autonomously operated mobility vehicle — a self-pushing wheelchair that is already in use at three airports in Japan.“They just take a seat, go through a few prompts, select which gate that they’re going to be departing out of, and then the chair just autonomously drives them to their gate,” said Justin Gagnon, WHILL’s vice president of business development.
