Scrapping tariffs on common items will lead to a drop in prices, a former senator wants travel allowance rules to change for MPs who own Canberra property and debate continues about fuel efficiency standards.

Crossbench senator Jacqui Lambie says the government’s plans to scrap tariffs on 500 items including toothbrushes and toasters won’t be enough to help Australians.Speaking on Nine’s Today show, the Tasmanian senator said there wouldn’t be doing much to help Australians or businesses.“If this is their way of slashing red tape for businesses out there, it’s not even going to be close enough,” she said.

“So I don’t I don’t believe ... you’re going to get much less off for tyres or anything else. And you can see they’re actually not sucking in a lot of savings from all of this.”She said people would hardly notice the changes, and it didn’t go far enough to cut red tape for businesses.“They want to get bigger and better than this ... Those small businesses and businesses out there are on the back foot right now, and they need some help,” Lambie said.
