I’m glad the new Caledonian Sleeper trains have all mod cons , but they’re not doing much to facilitate green travel. When we tried to book from London to Fort William, we were told that passengers with bicycles have to get up in the middle of the night to move them when the train separates. If the rail network wants to encourage travellers with bicycles, it will have to do better.• At the crematorium service of a colleague named Sally, the music was of course Gracie Fields singing Sally .

The Caledonian Sleeper is slow, expensive and utterly delightfulIf I suggested that the government spend £60 million on revamping a train service so that passengers can travel slower and still pay more than double the cost of a plane ticket to the same destination, you would probably say, “No thanks. This is great news. My wife and I took the Sleeper from Edinburgh to London last fall and the smelly, cramped plastic boxes were quite an unpleasant experience. We look forward to trying it again. still a better investment than HS2 I traveled on the Caledonian Sleeper train three years ago. When I bordered the train I swore that I was in the same sleeper carriage that I booked in 1974. Same carriage same service, but a welcome simile!
