Thomas Cook: The much-loved travel brand with humble roots

Image copyrightThe visit was such a success that Thomas Cook repeated it over several summers on behalf of Sunday schools which laid the foundations for the business.By 1855, after having pioneered trips around the British Isles and to London's Great Exhibition, Thomas Cook set his sights across the Channel to Paris where the International Exhibition was being held.More European trips followed, closely followed by America, Asia and the Middle East.

But as World War Two broke out, it was nationalised by the British government as part of British Railways, to save it from the Nazi occupation. "I see them as a pioneer in organised travel," says Ms Coulthurst, from holiday price comparison website TravelSupermarket, describing how people went on package holidays as children and later as adults with their own families.Image captionBut competition from other businesses also grew.

Its next owner in 2001 was another German company, C&N Touristic AG, which quickly rebranded the whole business as Thomas Cook. More acquisitions of shops and travel businesses continued across the world, including India.Through its long history, it is the 21st Century that the company has found hardest to adapt to.

night Fine to Bail out Banks but just let well known and much loved companies go to the Wall. It is really shameful. Is this just another company the victim of ill-judged Brexit Madness? ADarkDayForTravel bbcnewsnight

night The Goverment can bail out this scoundrel but not 150, 000 tourists and 9,000 UK jobs shameful.

Very bad management for years.!!!! At least ten years ,it's had chances to sell off its assets, it's airline, but too late.. It must have advised customers not to book without insurance.!!!

Thomas cook execs recieved 20 million in bonuses.....Disgraceful. As for the government bailing them out....No chance at all, they Cant even sort there own shit out!!!

night A very sad day for the UK and the travel industry. A part of British aviation history has been wiped out. Thousands of people employed by the company will have their lives changed forever. Very sad news indeed.

night

From humble roots to corporate greed!

A very sad day ! Not sure advising everyone on holiday it will be okay surely the hotels need payment too - how can they just keep the guests with no payment? it is not just the mammoth repatriation !! Which all news presenters are excited about !

And cue a price hike from tui...

When I voted for Brexit I knew people would lose jobs and holidays. However I knew blue passports were more important

The founding principles a far cry from the sex and alcohol fueled holidays sought by many people today and at times a total embarrassment to the UK.

If Thomas Cook was 32 in that photo, I'm 18.
