Derek Hanekom belives the free flow of Africans will be key in driving the growth of the tourism sector on the continent

The free movement of people everywhere in Africa, the easing or dropping of visa requirements and the deregulation of air services will be key in driving the growth of the tourism sector on the continent, tourism minister Derek Hanekom said on Thursday.

In his state of the nation address in February, President Cyril Ramaphosa said that SA was looking to double its international tourist arrivals from 10.5-million to 21-million by 2030. SA has the largest travel and tourism sector in Africa, contributing about R426bn to the local economy in 2018. “We need to work on all countries signing the Single African Air Transport Market, signed by only 23 countries so far. It’s intended to drive down airfares by allowing more airlines to freely access and increase frequency of flights to more countries. We need to be united in our aspiration to build and brand Africa as a continent of successes and opportunity,” he said.

The decision to"open skies" in Africa would translate into greater options for travellers and lower fares. Africa is home to 15% of the world’s population but it accounts for just 3% of the global air service market.

Anc dreamers, other countries are reversing such ill conceived decisions and Derek wants them implemented here. We have an immigration problem Sir and there are no jobs here and from where those immigrants come from - in which country do you live🤷🏿‍♀️

A good point indeed. From my experience.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Probably because anyone from outside the continent will be too shit scared to visit given our shocking state of affairs.

Thina we don't have security from Bosasa.

As do I. Welcome fellow African brothers & sisters.

No Derek. Growth will be driven when you and your cronies stop thieving

It will mean less jobs for our Coloureds already the forgotten race and our Xhosa on the East Coast.

Not the sharpest tool in the shed this guy

Derek Hanekom is a post tortoise.

The nicest thing I can say about this man is he is TOTALY bloody stupid and must have a medical condition!

This is his passport to crossover to the EFF should things go the other way for the ANC.

Flow in without money and do crime - just like other countries are experiencing.

To get free health and education yes

nogsariemarais Die DA lek hulle lippe af.

Yes, because all other top tourist destinations have done this in order to help tourism right? Not at all!!! It's safety (reduce crime), affordability (reduce taxes/don't regulate Airbnb) and accessibility (attract investments) that matter in order to achieve progress in tourism.

sariemarais Dis nou so reg in DA se kraal.

He is a fool...there is already free flow.....
