Council CEO says proposed regulations are about levelling the playing field

Businesses that stand to be affected by the government’s plans to regulate short-term home rentals, including those on the popular online platform Airbnb, have backed its proposed regulations saying it would help level the playing field.

In April, the government published the Tourism Amendment Bill for public comment. Should it come into law, short-term home rentals will be regulated under the Tourism Act and the minister of tourism could then specify various “thresholds” in terms of Airbnb rentals in SA. This could include limiting the number of nights that guests can stay and how much money a host can earn.

Critics of the bill argue that the regulations could put off potential visitors, hurting the tourism sector, which has been earmarked by the government as a key jobs driver. The proposed regulations are “not about Airbnb”, Tshivhengwa said. They are about ensuring that all tourism accommodation establishments compete fairly.

Tourism is the new gold in Africa - RamaphosaThe president closed the 2019 Africa Travel Indaba, saying he believes tourism hasn’t yet reached its potential to attract foreign direct investment or to help SMMEs. Mmmm, how does Malusi Gigaba feel about that? Is he on your ‘list’ Unfortunately the ANC is killing tourism with ridiculous visa rules, plans to limit AirB&B, not to mention destruction of cities like Durban, and infrastructure. But keep voters in ignorance, and blame lackadaisicals NOT in South Africa ☺️ The steady & criminal decline of SA into a failed state. Has coincided with the steady collapse of the tourist industry.
