State leaders will discuss easing the load on quarantine when repatriation flights from India resume under a federal plan to quell a backlash over the sudden move last weekend to threaten returning Australians with fines and jail terms.

Thousands of Australians remain desperate to return home as the federal government’s National Security Committee of cabinet met on Thursday afternoon to discuss how repatriation flights should resume once the ban is lifted after May 15. Eight chartered repatriation flights from India to Darwin were scheduled for May but those flights were cancelled as the number of COVID-19 infections in the Howard Springs facility quarantine grew to more than 50.if flights continued, and on Thursday said evidence showed the pause was helping to reduce case numbers.“We are very hopeful and confident that on the other side of the 15th of May we will be able to start restoring those repatriation flights.

Opposition leader Anthony Albanese questioned why the government did not bring Australians back on the plane that landed in India on Thursday with those medical supplies.

There are now 900 'vulnerable' Australians in India as the country's COVID-19 crisis continues to spiralAustralia's High Commissioner to India, Barry O'Farrell, said demand for consular support has been in 'overdrive' since the federal government's contentious India travel announcement. Why doesn't SBS seem to care about the societal effects of lockdowns and long term social consequences of Australian children seeing the world from this perspective ? What are they all doing in India - the PM gave advice a year ago to come home. The risk of travel has always been there but exposed by a viral contagion that people have wrongly assumed would not affect them. CovidSARS2 has its own rules, shows no fear, emotion or favour. SORRY, MY COMPASSION FATIGUE IS ABSOLUTELY EXHAUSTED.
